Cat6 & Cat6A Cable — What’s the Difference?

Both Cat6 & Cat6A cable are used for network and data wiring, but they have some key differences in speed, distance, and performance.

Cat6 is great for most small businesses and homes. It supports speeds up to 10 Gbps, but only for distances up to 55 meters (about 180 feet). Beyond that, the speed drops slightly. Cat6 cables are thinner and easier to install, which makes them popular for offices and residential buildings.

Cat6A, on the other hand, is the “advanced” version of Cat6 — the “A” stands for augmented. It can handle 10 Gbps speeds up to 100 meters (328 feet). In addition, Cat6A cables are better shielded, so they reduce interference and signal noise. However, they are thicker and less flexible, which can make them a bit harder to work with during installation.

In short, Cat6 is ideal for shorter runs and standard networks, while Cat6A is perfect when you need higher performance, longer distances, or future-proofing your network.

In summary:

  • Cat6 = fast, flexible, good for most installs.
  • Cat6A = faster over long distances, more durable, and more professional-grade.
